Visiting world class sailors skippered teams with crew from Big Brothers Big Sisters
of Metropolitan Detroit in a special fleet race as part of the 5th annual Detroit Cup
presented by Bayview Yacht Club that took place on Saturday, August 25, 2012.
During the international match raceing regatta, a select group of competitors in the
Detroit Cup, along with 12 Littles and six (6) Bigs, set aboard Bayview's Ultimate 20 sailboats on the Detroit River.
"We've got professional racers, most of whom are ranked in the top 100 globally,
here for some pretty serious racing right in our backyard on the Detroit River" says
Chris vaTol, a five-time Detroit Cup skipper and two-year volunteer
Big Brother. "But being able to take some kids out for their first time in a sailboat
reminds the veterans just how special, fun and exciting our sport is. To see it
through the kids' eyes makes this event just as great for the experienced sailors as it is for the
kids and their big brothers and sisters."
Bayview and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit partnered last year in a similar event and
there was great interest in repeating the day.
"We are thrilled to be partnered with Bayview Yacht Club for the second year in a row," shared
Dara Munson, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit. "This is a
wonderful opportunity to expose our Littles to water safety and to allow them to experience first-hand
racing and sailing with professionals. Opportunities like these aren't always available for many of the
youth in our programs. Having our Littles be a part of the race will certainly be memorable for each of them."
